How To Fix Photoshop That Can't Create Or Open Files

Unable to create or open files within Photoshop? Photoshop, which is the latest of Adobe`s Creative Suite, Photoshop CS6, includes powerful tools for editing photos and graphics. Although Adobe is usually quite good at providing bug fixes, fixes for software issues and even better functionality updates – Photoshop can still have its issues from time to time. Today, we take a look at why Photoshop may have some issues creating, or opening files. Let’s take a look into it.

Fix Photoshop that Cant Create or Open Files

Why Photoshop may fail to create or open files

We analyzed this problem by looking at various user reports and repair strategies that tend to be effective in solving this particular problem. It turns out that there are several different potential culprits that could be responsible for this behaviour:

  • Photoshop CC problem.
  • Photoshop does not have administrative access.
  • The Photoshop settings file is corrupt.
  • OpenCL or OpenGL causing instability.
  • Outdated or corrupted GPU driver.
  • Photoshop’s swap folder is on the same drive as the operating system.

How to fix Photoshop that isn’t Opening or Creating Files

Open Folders

If you can’t open PSD files in Photoshop, wait a while. After that, try opening the PSD file again. If the file still can’t be opened in Photoshop, go to the next method. By opening folders, you are able to re-establish a connection to a drive that may not have been connected to previously.

Turn on/off the OpenGL Device Driver Display and Update

  1. Go to Photoshop -> Select “Edit” -> Click on “Preferences” -> Select “Performance” -> A window opens: Uncheck [ ] Enable OpenGL display and click OK.
  2. Now close Photoshop and restart it.
  3. Enable OpenGL display after updating your graphics driver, otherwise, you will not be able to use OpenGL features.

By doing so, this should allow you to open Photoshop files again, as Photoshop (and most of Adobe applications) use OpenGL graphics drivers to process and start the applications functions, such as opening or creating files.

Reinstalling Adobe Photoshop

If none of your PSD files can be opened in Adobe Photoshop. Then the problem may be related to the application itself. In this case, the best way to fix this error is to reinstall Photoshop and try to reopen the PSD file.
If you can’t fix the error even after reinstalling the application, move on to the next method, as it may be related to serious corruption of the PSD file.

Close and Restart

Sometimes computers can experience electronic hangs that prevent programs or the operating system from working properly. If you experience strange and unusual behavior with any aspect of your computer, the first thing you should do is try to close and restart the program. Sometimes this resets the memory and other boot parameters to get the whole system working properly again.

Resetting Photoshop Settings

When you start Photoshop, it creates a settings file with all the parameters and options the program needs to work correctly. If this file is corrupt or incorrect, Photoshop won’t be able to open your files properly. Photoshop looks for this file every time you open the program, and if it doesn’t find it, it creates a new file in the system folder.

To reset, find the file and delete or move it to another location. (See the Resources section for information on how to find the file on your system.) If Photoshop doesn’t find the file the next time you run the program, a new clean file will be created.
